Autos Must Give Room to Other Road Vehicles
A new Virginia state law requires motorists to change lanes when passing other types of road vehicles, if the lane of travel is not wide enough to accommodate a minimum of 3 feet in distance between the motor vehicle and the other road vehicle. Previously the law did not require changing lanes. Motorists must change lanes even if that means over double-yellow lines. The new law applies to passing bicycles, mopeds, scooters, motorized skateboards, electric personal assistive-mobility devices, and animal or animal-drawn vehicles.
