Please Complain About Lee Hwy Plan

Please Complain About the Lee Hwy Plan
County representatives encountered 100* angry residents at LVCA’s recent virtual meeting on the Lee Hwy Study. The study proposed rezoning all of LV north of 18th St for commercial and high-rise development. This, along with other proposals on the south, east, and west would drastically change the character of the little sliver of LV that remained.
It is extremely important that LV residents, who want to preserve their homes and their neighborhood, contact County officials to signal their opposition. Below there is a sample letter and information about who to contact. Many other problems with the study were voiced by LV residents during the meeting. The the meeting recording is worth a listen or a re-listen (the recording will be posted very soon).
Please send a copy of your letter to webmaster@lyonvillage.org. As we learned with the RPP fiasco, the County will refuse to publish or provide copies of letters from individuals. Your letters and comments at the meeting will assist LCVA in drafting a longer letter representing the views of LV residents.

* 100 is the limit on our Zoom account. We know many more residents wanted to participate. Sorry, we were not prepared for the huge response.

Despite it all, we also want to thank Paul Holland, Chairman of the Plan Lee Highway Community Forum and Leon Vignes of Arlington County Planning Staff for bravely facing our 2-1/2 hour pummeling.

Sample Letter

Dear _____:

I saw for the first time on Monday, June 21, the proposal of the Plan Lee Highway Group for my part of Lyon Village (between Lee Highway and 18th Street).

I am totally opposed to any proposed changes by the Group that would (1) change the General Land Use Plan for properties in Lyon Village south of Lee Highway, and (2) allow for the rezoning of those properties to zoning districts that will allow greater building heights and densities or otherwise alter the existing single family nature of zoning in my neighborhood.

I am shocked that the Lee Highway Group and County staff would propose such changes to the land use plan and allowed zoning for the express purpose of encouraging investors and developers to demolish all the buildings in this part of a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. I question whether this is legal or consistent with County policy, particularly in view of the County Board’s recent effort to preserve the Lothrop house at Wilson Blvd. and N. McKinley St.

I ask the County Board to reject any such proposals for our part of Lyon Village.

Sincerely,
