COVID-19 Patients Must Pay Share of Hospital Costs

COVID-19 Patients Must Pay Hospital Costs
In early 2021, most health insurers waived COVID-19 treatment costs. More recently insurers are no longer waiving these costs or are phasing out cost-sharing waivers. It is estimated that out-of-pocket costs of COVID-19 hospitalizations average about $1,300. Although this is a large amount for most patients, it only represents a fraction of the cost to society for these preventable hospitalizations: $2.3 billion in just June and July 2021.
