Arlington Libraries Weren’t a Priority
Most Arlington library branches have been closed for 13 months. Only Shirlington and Westover were reopened, but with reduced hours and restricted occupancy. The Central Library is open only for book pickup. Many county facilities, like rec and nature centers, initially closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic have already reopened. Yet the County has kept libraries closed by enforcing a hiring freeze.
The situation may soon improve. The County Manager has approved a hiring freeze exception for our Libraries. The hope is to reopen some locations soon after FY2022 begins, July 1. Reopening of the Cherrydale and Glencarlyn branches will be delayed. ACPL Blog Post Sun Gazette Story Sun Gazette Editorial County Manager’s Proposed Budget (see slide 8)
12 Days of Active Winter Break
County staff and residents will be offering 12 different, kid-friendly activities for 12 Days of Active Winter Break to keep students and their families active and entertained. Activities will be free, physically distant, accessible, and walk/bike friendly.
The 12 Days will start with a kick-off event held on Zoom on Thur, Dec 17, from 6:30-7:30 PM. Register in Advance
Daily activities will be posted on social media.
Libraries Will Remain Closed
Library staff shares Arlington’s belief that the Library is a cornerstone of our community and acknowledges the hardship it causes to many when its physical Library spaces are inaccessible.
However, because COVID-19 cases remain above target thresholds and Arlington continues to experience community spread the library and its branches will remain closed. Library staff believes it is of paramount importance to protect the safety of Library patrons and staff, and that slowing community spread of the COVID-19 virus is a community-wide effort.
The status of the library will be reevaluated in October.
