County Considers Lower Speeds Limits
The County is considering lowering speed limits from 30 or 35 to 25 MPH along 7 roadways with high pedestrian activity. The only roadway near LV under consideration is Kirkwood between Lee Hwy & Washington Blvd.
Currently the speed limit is 25 MPH on all Arlington roads, unless higher speeds are specifically permitted. It is well established that lower speeds result in fewer pedestrian deaths and serious injuries. A public hearing to discuss and potentially approve the speed reductions is expected in July. The stretch of Washington Blvd between N. Quincy St and Glebe Rd near Ballston has been the site of several serious pedestrian collisions. Some pedestrians have said cars often do not stop for them along this four-lane road, even in crosswalks. Please observe extra caution along this stretch of Washington Blvd.
